Getting the most out of group shots

I hate to say it but organising and capturing group photos on the day is probably the most stressful part of the day for photographers and couples. However, don’t worry this blog will help you to plan for this. My biggest piece of advice is to plan for it, write down exactly who you want to be in the photos and decide how long you want to spend on them. Doing group photos should only take 20/30 minutes depending on how quick it is to round people up.

First of all, make a group shot list. I will send a questionnaire to you before the day so that we can plan and decide who is going to be in the group photos.

Let the oldies go first! We don’t want them hanging around waiting for the drunk groomsmen or bridesmaids to get into place so we want the oldies to go first so they can get back to the whisky on the rocks or their coffee.

Make sure you have all the VIPs like your Grandparents, parents, stepparents, siblings, maid of honour, best Man, Bridesmaids, Groomsmen, flower girls, page boys.

Get someone to help gather the groups, someone who knows most people. A best man or maid of honour is the best person for this job.

Know which friend groups you want pictures with, do you want university friends, school friends, new friends.

My last tip is how to get a photo of everyone. Someone is bound to be in the bathroom while you are doing the group photos. Maybe you could try this… once everyone is sat down ready to eat, you and your new husband or wife can go round each table with the photographer and have a picture with each table, therefore you have covered everyone.
